David Lloyd George was one of the dominating figures of British politics, but by 1931 his Liberal ideas of old-fashioned free trade were facing the stiff winds of protectionism caused by the global economic Depression. In the election of that year the Liberals were split, with some of them siding with the Conservatives who wished to emulate the protectionist policies of Germany. Lloyd George, however, reminded British voters that free trade had made Britain into a great exporting nation while also reducing the cost of living through cheap imports. His part of the Liberal Party ended up with 4 MPs.
